Mixing Colors

Kids love to explore the different variations of color blends. Some children will spend hours trying the other combinations, other may just want to see how quickly they can create muddy water. Either way, they will have fun mixing colors.

Mixing Colors

Materials
bowls
water
food coloring or paint
Styrofoam tray
straws

Put about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water in each bowl.
Add one type of color to each bowl. You would need about 4-5 drops of food coloring.
Put one straw into each bowl.
A small amount should go into the bottom of the straw. Put your finger over the other end of the straw sealing it.
Lift the straw out of the bowl and move it over to the tray.
Lift your finger off the top of the straw so that a couple of drops fall onto the tray.
Add a drop or two of another color and see what color you can create.

What happens if you add more of the first color to the mixture? How about adding a third color? What happens if you add a drop of oil to the mixture?

Tips

Practice putting your finger over the end of the straw and lifting it just over the bowl. See how much colored water you can pick up. Try to figure out how to release just one drop of the colored water at a time.
Have a large bowl where you can dump the mixture if it begins to look muddy. Then you can start again.

Have the kids make a chart showing what happens when different colors are mixed together. See if they can create a formula for their favorite color. How do you make light purple and dark purple?
