Paper, Paint, Pen or Marker, and a child
- Have your child decorate a border or print the hand
print border using Adobe
Acrobat (free download for reading .pdf files),
- Use the pen or marker to copy one of the poems from below and print it in the center of a
sheet of paper.
- Pour some paint into a tray, pie plate, or flat dish.
- Have the children dip their hands into the paint and make a hand
print on either side of the poem.
- Decorate around the edge of the paper.
You may want to practice making handprints on some
scrap paper first. Some of our visitors have sent in alternative
verses which are printed below.
Here's a note from one of our visitors
"I sit for my three year old grandson, whose mother sometimes gets discouraged at his art, so I wanted to give her a set of his handprints to remember those sweet hands by, so therefore I want to thank-you for the hand print poem.
God bless you and have a great day."
Here's a note from an author of a Handprint poem.
"My wife went back to work when our last child was in high school in 1978. She became a teacher in St. David's Day
School in Wilmington, DE. One day as she was thinking up a project for her little charges she wanted to have each child give a handprint to their mother for Mothers' Day. Because from time to time I wrote poems she asked me to compose an appropriate poem.
"
Handprints
Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my handprint
On furniture and wall
But everyday I'm growing
(I'll be all grown someday)
And all those tiny hand prints
Will surely fade away.
So here's a final handprint
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When they were very small.

With Love
I am so very small and
my fingerprints so large,
that you sometimes get
discouraged when I
leave them on the walls.
All those messy prints,
when I am grown someday,
will only be a memory that
has been washed away.
So here's a set of prints,
to help you to recall,
just how those hands looked
when they were very small.

I know you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls.
But everyday I'm growing,
I'll be all grown up someday,
And all the smudgies that I did
Will surely fade away.
So here's another bunch of them
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When I was very small.

Lots of little fingerprints
Grubbying up the walls
They get painted over when
The decorator calls
Smudges on the furniture
And on the tv screen
All removed by polishing
To leave things sparkling clean
Muddy little footprints trail
Across the kitchen floor
But Mrs Mop and bucket come
And then they are no more!
But little children grow so fast
And memories of handprints fade
This souvenir will bring them back
And as you see - it's all HAND-MADE

Handprints
There are always so many of my fingerprints to see,
On the furniture and walls from sticky, grubby me,
But if you stop and think a while,
You'll see I'm growing fast,
Those little handprints will disappear,
You can't bring back the past.
So here's a small reminder,
To keep not throw away,
Of how those tiny hands once looked,
To make you smile one day.
Ten Tiny Fingers
Ten tiny fingers, that always want to play,
That never stop exploring that wonder of today,
Ten tiny fingers, that from the very start,
Will reach out for tomorrow yet always hold your heart.

Here are my hands
So tiny so small
For you to hang
Upon the wall
For you to watch
As years go by
How we grow
My hands and I

This is my hand
My hand will do
A thousand loving things for you
You will remember when I am tall,
That once my hand was just this small.

Someday I'll jump through puddles, take a stroll of run a race,
Someday I'll walk across the street, or maybe walk in space,
Someday I'll scale a mountain, or join a ballet corps,
Someday I'll walk a tightrope, or explore the ocean floor,
Someday these feet will do some things that only heaven knows,
But for today they're happy just to wiggle all their toes.
I AM A DAISY,
I AM A FLOWER.
I AM A YOUNG GIRL WITH SO MUCH POWER.
I WILL GIVE MY HAND TO MY FRIENDS IN NEED,
I WILL ALWAYS STRIVE TO SUCCEED.
I LOVE TO LEARN, I LOVE TO WRITE,
I LOVE TO SHARE AND I NEVER FIGHT.
I WILL ALWAYS SHOW THE BEST OF ME.
I WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST I CAN BE.
I AM A DAISY, WHICH GIVES ME POWER.
I AM A DAISY, I AM A FLOWER.
A Father's Day Poem (sent in by one of our visitors)
Happy Father's Day to you.
Do you know how much I love you?
I love you with all my heart.
I miss you when we are apart.
I think of you all day.
I have fun when we play.
This poem is about to end
I LOVE YOU!
From your best friend.
Grandparents are cool people, who like to have you around,
They give you lots of special treats, like taking you to town,
Going to the movies, or swimming for the day,
Having fun together, in that extra special way,
Grandparents don't seem to mind, if you make loud noises or shout,
They just like to have you there, that's what it's all about.
Some houses try to hide the fact that children shelter there,
Ours boasts of it quite openly, the signs are everywhere,
For smears are on the windows, little smudges on the door,
I should apologise I guess for toys shrewn on the floor,
But I sat down with the children and we played and laughed and read,
And if the windows do not shine, their eyes will shine instead,
And when at times I'm forced to choose the one job or the other,
I want to be a housewife, but first I'll be a mother.
