Children can make Butterflies

childrens craft to make paper butterflies Despite their small size, butterflies are amazing creatures.  Their beauty, miraculous metamorphosis, and apparently carefree flight all spark a child's imagination.

Your children can use this simple pattern to make lots of different butterflies.  Be sure to find different colors and types of papers so that each butterfly can be unique.

Did you know there are around 20,000 different types of butterflies?  Most are found in the tropics, but butterflies can be found around the world.

craft pattern for making paper butterflies Paper Butterflies

Materials List

paper
scissors
glue
pencil
decorations

Instructions

  1. Fold the paper in half.
  2. Draw two circles, one smaller than the other.  Both should overlap the fold line and each other (see pattern).
  3. Cut along the dark line. But don't cut along the fold line.
  4. Cut out different types of decorations for your paper butterflies.  The decorations could be circles, lines, triangles.  Glue them on the butterfly's wings in patterns.
  5. Cut a thin piece of paper for each antennae.  Scrap scissors along the paper to curl it.

Hint:

  • Butterfly wings have matching patterns.  Use two layers of paper when cutting out decorations to make sure you have matching pieces for both wings.
  • Almost any colored paper can be used to make butterflies.  The picture shows butterflies made from construction paper.

Thanks to Heather Ferrebee for sending in this idea.
"My kids love to make paper butterflies and I had an Idea for you. After the butterfly is cut out fold it again and cut little circles in the wing parts and when that is done you can use different color tissue paper and tape or glue it to the back. It looks really neat when it is done too. "

Butterfly Wings

  1.  Butterflies have two sets of wings attached to their thorax (middle body part).
  2. The upper pair of wings, the ones closest to the head, are identical. They are mirror images of each other. This means that if you put them together all the patterns would match.
  3. The lower pair of wings are also mirror images of each other, but they are generally smaller and different in color and design from the upper pair of wings.

Try This:

black-round-bullet4 Place the palms of your hands together. Notice how your fingers and thumbs fit together. Your hands, like butterfly wings, are mirror images of each other. So, when placed together the fingers match in size and shape. This is how the wings of a butterfly fit together when they are folded together.

black-round-bullet4 Keeping the heels of your hands together, open your hands. This is like the wings of the butterfly when it is open.

The upper side of each pair of wings is more brightly colored than is their underside. This difference helps a butterfly to be more camouflaged while resting. Camouflaged mean to blend in with the background, which makes them difficult to see.
